Eva - USA

Who am I?
I'm Eva - an American who grew up in Connecticut, moved to Boston for university, and then moved to a few other places much further away, mainly around Eastern Europe. Now I've come to Brno while I study for my Master's degree in political science, and I absolutely love it here. I've taught English in the US, Russia, Morocco, and Poland, and it's always fulfilling for me to get to know my students and learn together as friends.

What do you love?
Languages, geography, knitting, cats, and the ocean, to name a few.

You life slogan or credo?
"Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't." -Bill Nye the Science Guy

Why me?
I think that learning a language is brave and exciting, and I love having the chance to help people achieve that. I've personally taken courses in German, Russian, Hungarian, and Lithuanian, and now I'm trying to learn Czech, so I understand how difficult it can be to make the jump from a textbook to a conversation. In this way, a good class should involve much more than memorization and repetition. I can't wait to hear your stories, share thoughts and experiences, and laugh throughout.

Hi, my name is Victoria and I’m from Michigan (USA). I have a huge appreciation for Social sciences, and studied Political Science & Psychology in College.

I love volunteering at animal shelters and zoos. I’m an athletic person who loves sports, and spent most of my life figure skating, playing tennis, and running. I adore books. Philosophy books are probably my favorite, followed by Anthropology-based books and dystopian novels. I love reading Medical Journals and studying Anatomy books. I love languages. Amanda - USA

Who am I?
Ahoj! My name is Amanda. I grew up in Michigan, USA, and I’m now studying and living in Prague. I attend Charles University, where I study history and Czech. Following graduation, I’m going to work with international students on a university level.

What do you love?
I like to appreciate the little things - when the tram comes the second you get to the station, when you get the combination of spices in your meal just right, or when you unexpectedly make someone smile. I find that looking for pleasure in all things helps me love...well, everything!

You life slogan or credo?
When nothing goes right, go left.

Why me?
I’m teaching you English, I’m working on my Czech behind-the-scenes. Being a student of language myself plays a huge role in my teaching, because I’m able to see first-hand what can engage people. I know there is no “one size fits all”, and that is reflected in my style of adapting unique lessons to individual students. I believe in a healthy balance between structure and flexibility. A lesson focus of mine tends to be colloquial English, which allows a student to let their speaking “flow” and become more conversational over time.

I want a free lecture with Amanda!

Andrej - UK

Ahoj! My name is Shengyue but I go by Carl most of the time. I'm from Chongqing, China and now I am a full-time student at Univerzita Karlova, majoring in Liberal Arts & Humanities.

What do you love?
Traveling have always been my greatest passion and life inspiration! I feel that there is a close connection between traveling and the diversity of human society, which has planted much curiosity and the drive to explore inside of me. To travel is to have an marvelous expedition, finally, it all comes down to ourselves, physically and spiritually.

You life slogan or credo?
Keep exploring. Hit the road.

Why me?
I’ve never lived abroad but I had a homestay experience in California, US. I travelled a lot, home and abroad. I went to a foreign language high school and majored in English. To put it short, just don’t judge a book by its cover, fellows! I use English everyday! But it turns out to be an advantage at some point that I also find it easier to connect with you guys because we are non-native users and we are pretty much facing the same issue and enemy- lack of confidence. That means we are aiming at the same goal- confidence boost.( Of course mine boost comes after several rounds of pivo!)
My classes would be a time for laughter and real practical information and cultural points. You can immerse yourself in a real-life simulation. Also, you can get acquainted with another culture. My Chinese background and international perspective has a lot to offer. Sit back, relax, and here goes your daily doze of English!

Ray - USA

Who am I?
I am an American who has been living in Europe for a total of 16 years, including four years in Moravia from 1991-1995. My Czech is good, but my skills have definitely fossilized and I make the same mistakes over and over. I have worked as a journalist and English teacher, and for the last 20 years I have worked in corporate communications. I have written many speeches in my career for business people, but now I am active in Toastmasters so that I can learn how to be a better public speaker.

What do you love?
I love time with friends, which is unfortunately harder to come by in these busy times. Like James Baldwin said, I love debating people with whom I do not disagree too much.

You life slogan or credo?
"We all need to learn how to shut up and listen."

Why me?
I am an experienced teacher and writer. I enjoy coaching people in communicating clearly, whether it's language knowledge or presentation skills. I have a thorough understanding of English grammar. Unfortunately, traditional teaching methods have unfortunately convinced people that grammar is boring and unhelpful, but if it's done right, it can help people communicate efficiently and with confidence.

Sam - UK

Who am I?
Hi, I’m Sam and I’m from the UK. I recently finished a PhD in Czech literature. Back in England, I also had my own little theatre company. I’ve come to Prague to explore the culture and write a novel.

What do you love?
I love writing, reading and developing ideas for short films and plays. I’ve been to and from Prague for ten years, teaching English, sampling the svíčková and the Staropramen, and learning as much as I can about the history. I love it here. I also play the guitar and piano. And obsess (a little) over cricket.

Why me?
My classes will be relaxed and fun, with plenty of opportunity to talk, share ideas, and debate different topics. We will play games and practise conversations you can use every day. Confidence is the key to learning and improving language skills. And this is what we will focus on.

Theodore - USA

Who am I?
My name is Theodore and I came to Europe from the United States three years ago. For most of that time I was living in Slovakia trying to trace the roots of my family's Slovak heritage. In college I studied musicology and classical guitar performance. While in the USA I was a public school teacher for some time and also a gigging musician.

What do you love?
I love dogs. Sometimes it makes my day just to go for a walk or jog and to get to pet a friendly, furry neighbor. I also love my hobbies: reading, exercising, and practicing music. I have been studying the guitar for most of my life but recently I have also been learning to play the violin and to sing more. There is definitely satisfaction to be had from making music on an instrument that you have some mastery of. But there is a whole other kind of satisfaction that comes from achievement during the beginning stages of learning an instrument.

You life slogan or credo?
"Leave things better than you found them."

Why me?
I am a pretty easy-going guy and I love to help others. I believe in making the world a better place by starting right in your own neighborhood. If that means helping my neighbors to speak better English then I can do just that! I have been a teacher for a long time and I have the patience to help students acquire new grammar and vocabulary and also to practice towards fluency. Learning Slovak and Czech myself has helped me to understand what English learners need in order to succeed.

I want a free lecture with Theodore!

Thomas - UK

Who am I?
I’m Thomas and I’m from the south east of England. I studied Asian Studies and German at university. I’ve been teaching business English in Germany for the past year and now want to do more conversational classes here in Prague.

What do you love?
I have a keen interest in animals, languages and history. I have a pet parrot at home, I play a lot of video games and sometimes play guitar too. I’ve tried to learn lots of different languages in the past, but so far only German has stuck. Maybe I’ll learn some Czech in the future.

You life slogan or credo?
“Only when a mosquito lands on your testicle will you find a non-violent solution to a problem.”

Why me?
I want to do a wide variety of lessons with different themes and topics. We can go through some esoteric lessons about history, linguistics, card and board games even role-playing games for the more adventurous. Whatever you want to talk about we can find a way to cover it.

I want a free lecture with Thomas!
